The Alaska Slide Collection consists of 150 35mm slides divided into four discrete sets: Reindeer roundup (26 slides, not after 1990); Eskimo art documentary slides (74 slides plus descriptive booklet and 3 audio tapes, 1971); Totem poles (20 slides plus descriptive booklet, 1977); and The great Alaskan earthquake, 27 March 1964 (30 slides plus descriptive booklet, 1964?). It also includes the descriptive booklet "Sculpture of the Eskimos" by Mary Jane Swan and Moiya Wright (1977), which lacks the slides that are to accompany it.

Ruth A. M. Schmidt (b. Apr. 22, 1916, Brooklyn, NY–d. March 29, 2014, Anchorage, AK) was a geologist and a pioneer for women scientists. During World War II, Schmidt was recruited by Columbia University Professor A. K. Lobeck to serve as an assistant, the first female graduate student to teach all-male classes at Columbia.
